Longshadows, designed by Anne Hanson for the 2011 Fall in Full Color Knitspot Club, is one of my favorite scarf / shawl patterns. I love leaf patterns, and the all-over leaf pattern of this design with the scalloped edges is beautiful and stunning in its simplicity.
It looks so pretty in all these colors! Thanks to the knitters on Ravelry who allowed me to borrow their project photos for this post (clockwise from top center: Blissknitter’s in STF Connemara, MyaLMG’s in an STF OOAK plum/purple, Knitspot’s in STF Autumn Aurora, KatRog’s in an STF OOAK blue/green, KimKimKim’s in STF Autumn Aurora, AutumnSky’s in STF Dance the Orange and JHSizzle’s in STF Autumn Aurora).
It’s designed and knit in Spirit Trail Nona, a superwash merino / cashmere / silk two-ply lace weight that is a really delightful yarn, and a perfect fiber blend for drapey lace projects. Nona is a “heavy” lace weight, so it’s perfect for new lace knitters as well as seasoned knitters, and patterns where you’d like a little more substance. One 600 yard skein is enough for the scarf size; the larger rectangular shawl requires two skeins.
Longshadows is so elegant, yet at the same time it’s a pattern that’s easy to get the hang of and memorize. It’s knit from the center out in two panels and then grafted together (which just takes patience and a bit of time, but gives the result of both sides looking the same when you wrap it around your neck). It’s been a few years since I knit my Longshadows (the bronze one on the upper left and above, in an OOAK color experiment I dyed when I first had this base spun to see how it worked with dye), but it’s still one of my favorite scarves so I thought I’d showcase it on the blog.
Also, I have to mention how much I love working with Anne Hanson. It’s always great fun to collaborate with her, and I love seeing what she creates with my yarns. Her patterns are always impeccable ~ you just can’t go wrong with a Knitspot pattern!
