First off, sophy0075 is the winner of the set of mini-skeins from last week’s post! Congratulations!
Kathleen Dames has just released a new pattern, Patchwork Princess, designed and knit in Spirit Trail Fiberworks’ Brigantia. This yarn, a perennial customer favorite, is a DK weight blend of Polwarth wool and Bombyx Silk. Kathleen knit her sweater in the “Werewolf in London” colorway, which is a moody blue-grey tonal solid.
Polwarth is a breed of sheep developed in Australia in 1880. They are a crossbred of one-quarter Lincoln and three-quarters Merino which created a breed with a high-yielding fleece, longer-stapled than pure Merino (less pilling!) with some of the sheen of Lincoln (a longwool breed).
Polwarth is next-to-skin soft for most people, and Brigantia is a wonderfully long-wearing yarn with little pilling because of the longer staple length of Polwarth. The combination of wool and silk means Brigantia has a lovely sheen from both the Lincoln in the wool and the silk in the blend, and with the higher percentage of wool also holds its shape and makes stitchwork really pop.
This was a really fun collaboration to work on with Kathleen. We met just this past Fall at the New York Sheep & Wool Festival, where I have another of her beautiful designs, Sotherton, on display in my booth. I adore cables, and had recently finished another hoodie, so I was totally into that look. I look forward to the chance to work with her again!
I am so happy with the design Kathleen has created! I love these cable details, and it looks to be a fun knit.
We’ll have coupons for a free Ravelry pattern download at the Maryland Sheep & Wool Festival, with the purchase of yarn to knit this lovely sweater!
