Knit & Dye Fair Isle Workshop!

I’m so excited to announce an upcoming workshop at my studio at Blue Ridge Artisans in Sperryville, VA!   Come out and spend the day in beautiful Rappahannock County, just 90 minutes from Washington, DC. to learn fair isle knitting techniques from renowned author, designer and knitwear teacher Tanis Gray, and yarn dyeing two ways from Jennifer Heverly (me 🙂 ). I’ve been dyeing yarn since 2003, and will teach you how to dye yarn two different ways, to create two colorways for your own unique colorwork project.

The pink is so bright and fun it defies the camera 🙂

Tanis Gray is coming to Blue Ridge Artisans to teach Fair Isle knitting on Saturday, May 12, 2018, from 9 am to 12 pm. If you’ve never tried to knit colorwork, or you’ve been too nervous to try, or you can’t quite get your floats right, or you just want to improve your skills and learn some new tips, Tanis is the best! You’ll come away from this workshop with lots of tips and techniques to start knitting with two colors, or take your colorwork to a whole new level.

Tanis will cover basic Fair Isle knitting techniques for English, Continental and Combination knitters, tackle common issues, proper technique, how to trap floats, Latvian braids, Fair Isle history and set good Fair Isle knitting habits. You’ll put everything you’ve learned into practice and knit an exclusive unisex Fair Isle cowl designed in Spirit Trail Fiberworks yarn for this workshop. This 3-hour class is open to all levels, but participants should be comfortable casting on, joining and knitting in the round.

Participants will knit this beautiful cowl, and then dye their own yarn for another project.

After a 2 hour lunch break (there are lots of options within walking distance from my studio), participants will reconvene for an afternoon of dyeing fun with me, from 2 pm – 5 pm. In this workshop, participants will learn the basics of dyeing yarn, and will dye two skeins using two different techniques – kettle dyeing and speckling – to create the perfect contrasting yarns for colorwork projects.

Two skeins of worsted weight yarn are provided prior to the workshop for Tanis’ portion of the day, and you’ll have your choice of fingering, dk, or worsted weight yarn for the dye portion of the day.

So, what do you get? 6 hours of instruction from two experienced teachers, 4 skeins of yarn, and the supplies / materials to dye two of those skeins yourself. And, a relaxing and fun day in beautiful Rappahannock County, Virginia!
