New! Merino – Cotton for Summer!

It may not officially be summer yet, but the temperature has been creeping up here in the high desert of New Mexico. After what locals tell me was a longer and colder than usual winter, daytime temps are up in the high 70’s and 80’s with super low humidity, and night temps are typically 30 degrees lower. It’s kind of perfect up here at 6,600 feet, if you ask me.

But the first warm day I walked over to the studio in my black running tights I had a Holy Crap! moment. That sun is hot, and black soaks it up (I’m being super careful about my adorable black dog being out in the sun too long). I knew I needed some lighter colored clothing to deflect the glorious sunshine, rather than soak it up. And some lighter fibers, as well.

The lack of elasticity in 100% cotton yarn is really hard on my hands, so I never knit with it anymore. I started looking for blends, and found a 50% Superwash Merino, 50% Cotton yarn in both fingering and dk weights that seemed like it might be pretty great. I couldn’t wait to get it in, get some test colors dyed, and knit a swatch.

I’m really super pleased to report this yarn is simply lovely. It’s light, soft, has fantastic drape, and best of all, it has the elasticity of wool to make it easier on the hands. I am in love! I started knitting a Sunshine Coast sweater by Heidi Kirrmaier a few days ago, and I’m enjoying every stitch.

I’ve created 10 new tonal solid colorways for this update, and paired these with 9 variegated / speckled colorways, all in a bright, happy summertime palette.

I went a little crazy with photos, but they all look so great together! The color combos are endless – email me if you’d like help putting colors together; I just love doing that! For photos of each yarn, check out the Special Shop Update page on my website. Each listing has several photos of each color as well; click on “view fullsize image” below the photos to embiggen.

As I mentioned above, I’m knitting a Sunshine Coast in “Tropics,” a soft but vibrant aqua blue. Here are some other patterns I love for this yarn:

Nitty Gritty: this is a dyed-to-order update. All listings will be open until June 21, 2019. Then I’ll close them and get to work. I anticipate shipping all orders within four weeks, if not sooner.

May Subscriber Inspiration Colorways!

This month’s colorways are based on a photo of a tile newsletter subscriber Cindy received, which is a beautiful mix of colors. It immediately fueled my imagination on all the different colorways I could create:

I’m so happy with how this month’s colorways turned out, because I think I really nailed those tile colors :-D. All four of them work well together for colorwork, and of course individually.

Bright magenta/purple is “Create Your Self,” Soft Gray with a tinge of pale pink here and there is “Infinite Possibilities,” rich royal blue is “You Only Live Once,” and a pretty speckle of pinks, blues, grays along with some of the yellows and oranges in the tile is “Imagine It Real.”

All four are available for pre-order from now through May 26, or while supplies last. All orders will ship out by no later than the week of June 24, 2019.

You have your choice of two bases this month: Birte, DK weight superwash Merino, Cashmere, and Silk, and Verdande, Worsted weight of the same blend. Be sure to choose the correct base from the drop-down menu on each product page.
